using maps to tell stories
While maps have been common on the web for a few years now, the way they are used is limited. Basically, it is navigation and mash ups which are those markers that show you all points of interesting(e.g., rentals, cafes, hotels, etc). Why not use them to tell stories? Throughtout the history of computers, people have been using them to understand the geographic landscape around them. These systems are called Geographic Information Systems(GIS). Today these systems are blending with the web.
National Trust for Historic Preservation recently wrote an article about the eleven most endangered historic places in the United States. It is a professional site with a slide show and video but no map. Click here to see an alternative based on maps.
